C.I.R.A. (Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali), or the Italian Aerospace Research Centre, is a leading research institution based in Campania, Italy. Established in 1984, it serves as Italy’s primary center for aerospace research and technological innovation. CIRA is located in Capua, near Naples, and plays a crucial role in advancing both aeronautical and space technologies, contributing to Italy's and Europe’s aerospace development.

The organization focuses on a wide range of research activities, including aircraft and spacecraft design, propulsion systems, atmospheric re-entry, aerodynamics, materials science, and space exploration technologies. CIRA’s key mission is to support the Italian and European aerospace industries by developing innovative technologies and conducting research that improves performance, safety, and sustainability in aviation and space travel.

One of CIRA’s most notable projects is the PRO.R.A. (Piattaforma di Ricerca Avanzata), an advanced research platform that includes a range of state-of-the-art facilities. These facilities include wind tunnels, laboratories for testing new materials, and systems for simulating flight conditions and atmospheric re-entry. CIRA also runs the Plasma Wind Tunnel (Scirocco), one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world, which is used to test spacecraft and re-entry vehicles under extreme heat and pressure conditions, simulating re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.

CIRA is heavily involved in collaborative efforts with national and international aerospace organizations, including the European Space Agency (ESA), and is a member of Italy’s aerospace research ecosystem. The center also participates in various European research programs aimed at advancing aerospace technologies and improving environmental sustainability in aviation.

Through its pioneering work in research and development, CIRA has become a key player in both Italy’s and Europe's aerospace sectors, pushing the boundaries of innovation and contributing to the competitiveness of the aerospace industry.
