Hydrogen Engine Architecture Virtually Engineered Novelly
HEAVEN
The "HEAVEN" project, formally titled "Hydrogen Engine Architecture Virtually Engineered Novelly," aims to advance climate-neutral aviation through the use of alternative fuels such as green hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Coordinated by Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co KG, the project started on January 1, 2023, and will run until December 31, 2026, with a total budget of €35.64 million, of which €29.91 million is funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe program.
Key Objectives:
- UltraFan H2 Development: The project seeks to evolve the UltraFan engine architecture into UltraFan H2 by improving gas turbine efficiency through the use of hydrogen and hybrid-electric technology. This aims to achieve a 20% reduction in fuel burn, contributing significantly to the decarbonization goals of the Clean Aviation Strategic Research Innovation Agenda (SRIA).
- Enabling Technologies: Incorporate innovative enabling technologies at TRL3 to enhance gas turbine efficiency. The goal is to validate the UltraFan H2 design up to TRL6, supporting its entry into service by 2035.
- System-Level Requirements: Capture and mature system-level requirements for short-medium range (SMR) propulsion, including operational and maintenance needs.
Expected Impact:
- Efficiency Improvements: The project aims to reduce fuel burn by 20%, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the European Green Deal's climate-neutral targets.
- Technology Validation: Validate novel gas-turbine technologies, advancing them to TRL6, which will pave the way for future hydrogen-powered aircraft.
