Consortium for the AdVent of aero-Engine Demonstration and aircraft Integration Strategy with Hydrogen

The "CAVENDISH" project, formally titled "Consortium for the AdVent of aero-Engine Demonstration and aircraft Integration Strategy with Hydrogen," aims to support the European Green Deal's target of carbon neutrality in aviation by 2050. The project focuses on developing and demonstrating breakthrough technologies for direct hydrogen combustion systems. Coordinated by Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co KG, the project runs from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2026, with a total budget of €29.15 million, of which €21.67 million is funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe program.

Key Objectives:

1. Hydrogen Combustion System: Research, prototype, and integrate 100% hydrogen combustion systems onto a modern aeroengine for ground testing, starting in late 2024. This aims to be a first in Europe and is a cornerstone for future in-flight demonstrations.
2. System and Powerplant Integration: Work on the integration of hydrogen systems with established airframers and certification pathways to support flight tests and eventual product development for commercial hydrogen-fueled aircraft by 2035.
3. Dual Fuel and Cryo-Compressed Systems: Explore alternative technologies like dual fuel combustor systems (operating on both hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and cryo-compressed tank systems to facilitate hydrogen's introduction in aviation.
