AI-Enabled autonomous flight of indoor drones

AI-Flight aims to enable the autonomous operation of commercial drone systems for industrial applications indoors without visual line of sight. To this end, the project is exploring the use of image processing and artificial intelligence methods. The project is creating initial AI-based approaches to enable drones to be situationally aware of their surroundings. It is also exploring the use of AI to implement external systems for camera-based operational monitoring in order to evaluate and validate the behavior of a drone during operation. The methods developed in the project are to be validated in an industrial validation scenario and represent the starting point for further research steps to implement reliable and autonomous drone systems for industrial applications.

AI-Flight zielt darauf ab, den autonomen Betrieb von kommerziellen Drohnen-Systemen für industrielle Anwendungen in Innenräumen ohne Sichtkontakt (engl. Visual Line of Sight) zu ermöglichen. Dazu sondiert das Projekt den Einsatz von Methoden der Bildverarbeitung und künstlicher Intelligenz. Im Projekt werden erste KI-basierte Ansätze geschaffen, um Drohnen ein Situationsbewusstseins bzgl. ihrer Umgebung zu ermöglichen. Außerdem erfolgt die Sondierung des Einsatzes von KI zur Realisierung von externen Systemen zur kamerabasierten Operationsüberwachung, um das Verhalten einer Drohne während des Betriebs zu bewerten und zu validieren. Die im Projekt entwickelten Methoden sollen im Rahmen eines industriellen Validierungsszenarios validiert werden und stellen den Ausgangspunkt für weiterführende Forschungsschritte zur Realisierung verlässlicher und autonomer Drohnensystemen für industrielle Anwendungen dar.
