HydrogEn Lightweight & Innovative tank for zerO-emisSion aircraft
H2ELIOS
The "H2ELIOS" project, formally titled "HydrogEn Lightweight & Innovative tank for zerO-emisSion aircraft," aims to develop and demonstrate innovative lightweight liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage systems for aviation. The project runs from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025, with a total budget of €12.06 million, of which €9.96 million is funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe program.
Key Objectives:
- Developing LH2 Storage Systems: The project focuses on creating an effective and lightweight LH2 storage system to be used in aircraft. The storage system will be implemented as demonstrators in fuselage-like cylinder sections.
- Ground and Flight Testing: The project includes both ground tests to achieve TRL 5 for storage solutions and plans for subsequent flight testing to reach TRL 6.
- Integration and Demonstration: The final aim is to integrate these storage systems into specified aircraft architectures for flight demonstrations, contributing to the decarbonization goals set by the European Green Deal.
Expected Impact:
- Technological Advancements: The project aims to provide new LH2 storage solutions that are integral to the airframe structure, capable of withstanding respective loads.
- Economic and Environmental Benefits: By enabling hydrogen-powered aviation, the project supports the broader objective of reducing emissions in the aviation industry.
